The Australian Minister of Defence, Richard Marles, announced that the US Navy will deploy several nuclear-powered submarines to a strategic port on the west coast of Australia, as part of the Aukus military cooperation agreement involving Australia, the US, and the UK.

The submarines, which will be operated by the US military, will begin to operate from this port starting next year, aiming to strengthen military presence in the South China Sea, a region of great strategic importance amid tensions between Beijing and Taiwan.

Marles recently discussed Aukus in London, where the unexpected resignation of his British counterpart, John Healey, overshadowed the talks. Under this agreement, Australia will purchase three second-hand American submarines starting in 2032 and will collaborate with the UK to build a new class of nuclear submarines. The Aukus program is essential for Australia's defense strategy, with an estimated cost of up to 235 billion dollars over the next 30 years.
