Ursula von der Leyen will visit Greenland. The President of the European Commission will discuss EU cooperation and the strategic importance of the Arctic

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen will travel to Nuuk on 6–7 September to strengthen relations between the European Union and Greenland and to discuss the growing strategic importance of the Arctic region. During the visit, Ursula von der Leyen will meet with Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and the Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands, Beinir Johannesen. The discussions will address the challenges and opportunities in Greenland and the Arctic region, as well as concrete measures to intensify bilateral cooperation.

On Sunday, the head of the European Executive will visit Greenland’s ice sheet together with the Greenlandic and Danish leaders. On Monday, the three will launch, at the headquarters of the company Tusass, an enhanced satellite connectivity project for Greenland. Also on Monday, the European Union, the Government of Greenland, and the Government of Denmark will sign a renewed joint declaration on relations between the EU and Greenland. The visit takes place in the context of the review of European policy for the Arctic region, so that it responds to current and future developments. Ursula von der Leyen will be accompanied by Commissioner Jozef Síkela and Special Adviser Jyrki Katainen. The initiative follows Síkela’s visit in May, which focused on EU–Greenland political dialogue and the “Future Greenland 2026” conference.
