Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, has declined the invitation to attend the final of the World Cup, where Spain, a member of the EU, will face Argentina, a match that will take place on Sunday in New Jersey.
Although important leaders will be present at the event, such as the President of the USA, Donald Trump, and the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, Von der Leyen will not be present due to scheduling conflicts. The spokesperson for the European Commission confirmed that the president received the invitation but will not be able to attend.
It is also expected that the President of Argentina, Javier Milei, will watch the match from home out of superstition. In the previous weeks, Von der Leyen has shown support for Ukraine and attended the Bastille Day celebrations in France.
On Monday, she will meet with Mario Draghi in Brussels for discussions on European competitiveness. Football remains an area where European teams have had a significant advantage in international competitions.
