The IPC system, used by the UN to assess food insecurity, has declared only four famine crises since 2004, the most recent being in Sudan in 2024. Although it previously warned of impending famine in Gaza, the UN waited for conclusive data. Now an official statement on the famine in Gaza, where 500,000 people live, is expected. Israel is disputing the famine allegations, waging a military offensive in the area. To declare famine, strict criteria of food shortages and malnutrition must be met.
