The Ukrainian Government's draft law aims to update the list of minority languages that benefit from protection under the European Charter. Thus, Moldovan and Russian will be removed, while Romanian, along with Belarusian, Bulgarian, Gagauz, Crimean Tatar, Modern Greek, German, Polish, Slovak, Hungarian, and Hebrew, will remain protected. Recent statistics show an increase in identification as ethnic Ukrainians, with 78% of respondents declaring Ukrainian as their mother tongue in 2024.
