Ukraine has developed a prototype of a laser air defense system, called 'Sunray', to counter Russian drone attacks. Recently tested, this portable and relatively inexpensive system can be quickly transported to the front line and has demonstrated effectiveness by destroying a drone in a matter of seconds. Built in about two years with a modest budget, Sunray could be marketed for a few hundred thousand dollars, much less than Western systems like Lockheed Martin's HELIOS.
This initiative comes in the context of Russia's ongoing attacks and delays in military aid deliveries from the West. President Zelensky has emphasized the importance of developing internal defense capabilities. The laser system is part of a broader effort to create low-cost defense solutions, including interceptor drones. Although these technologies cannot intercept advanced ballistic missiles, they can significantly reduce the impact of drone attacks on critical infrastructure in Ukraine. Thus, Ukraine is becoming one of the few countries implementing an operational military laser system, essential in combating Russian kamikaze drones.
