The Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, announced the closure of the Ukrainian embassy in Havana and the reduction of diplomatic relations with Cuba, as a result of the large number of Cuban citizens recruited to fight in the war in Ukraine on the side of Russia. The announcement coincided with Ukraine's vote against a UN resolution calling for the end of the American embargo on Cuba. Sybiha emphasized that the vote is not against the Cuban people, but against the inaction of the Cuban authorities regarding the recruitment of their citizens. It is estimated that between 1,000 and 5,000 Cubans are fighting in Ukraine, however, the Cuban Foreign Ministry has denied these accusations.
