Uganda decided on Wednesday to temporarily close its borders with the Democratic Republic of Congo in response to the intensification of the Ebola hemorrhagic fever epidemic in the neighboring country. The announcement was made by a senior official from Uganda's Ministry of Health, who specified that the border remains open only for members of disease control teams, humanitarian aid, food and goods transport, as well as for certain members of the security forces, under strict conditions. Anyone arriving from the DRC will have to isolate for 21 days.
The World Health Organization declared on May 17 the Ebola outbreak in the DRC a public health emergency of international concern, highlighting the risks of virus spread to neighboring countries, which prompted governments to adopt additional preventive measures.
