Two tornadoes struck the coastal city of Marsala, in western Sicily, on Friday, injuring dozens of people and causing significant damage to buildings and several cars. The phenomena approached from the sea, and footage captured by locals showed two waterspouts heading toward the city.
At least 11 people were taken to hospital after being hit by debris and shards of glass. Among the injured is a 70-year-old man, admitted in critical condition to the hospital in Mazara del Vallo with multiple fractures.
A school was affected by the strong winds. Six children suffered minor cuts and scrapes, while the 273 students inside the building were safely evacuated. Windows were shattered, and furniture was overturned.
Authorities and emergency services are assessing the damage. The incident comes at a time when southern Italy is threatened by the formation of a “medicane,” a Mediterranean storm with hurricane-like characteristics. Experts warn that unusually high Mediterranean Sea temperatures could fuel more intense storms.
