Turkey proposes a bill that prohibits access for children under 15 to social networks, requiring age verification for users.

The AK Party, led by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has submitted a bill to parliament that would prohibit access to social media for children under 15 years old.

This initiative comes in response to concerns about the impact of digital platforms on the health and safety of minors. The bill requires social media providers to implement age verification systems and to offer parental control tools. Users over the age of 15 will have access to separate digital services, and harmful content must be removed quickly in emergency cases. Companies that do not comply with the regulations risk fines of up to 3% of their global revenue. Turkey, already having strict policies regulating digital platforms, continues to block a significant number of websites and posts deemed problematic. Leyla Sahin Usta, the vice president of the AKP parliamentary group, mentioned that social media will have six months to comply with the new requirements.
