Donald Trump's lawyers have requested an extension to pay the amount of 5 million dollars set by a civil ruling in 2023 in favor of journalist E Jean Carroll.
The request was made after the Supreme Court refused to review Trump's appeal. Trump's new lead attorney, Josh Halpern, requested more time to familiarize himself with the details of the case, considering that the former attorney, Justin Smith, has become a federal judge. The jury found that Trump sexually assaulted Carroll in 1996 and subsequently defamed her.
Although Trump has deposited the money into an escrow account, he is trying to delay the release of the amount, which has grown to nearly 5.8 million dollars with interest. Carroll's attorney, Roberta Kaplan, accused Trump of using the request as a maneuver to buy time. Trump has denied the allegations and promised to continue the legal fight. Carroll's lawyers have asked the court to compel Trump to pay the awarded damages.
