American President Donald Trump stated that he will soon decide on new arms deliveries to Taiwan, an issue that has sparked discontent in Beijing. Trump mentioned that he had a constructive discussion with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, who warned him to be cautious in arms sales to the island. Taiwan recently announced purchases of American weapons worth $11.1 billion, the largest sale since 2001, which prompted Beijing to launch military exercises around the island. The new U.S. National Defense Strategy for 2026 emphasizes deterring China in the Indo-Pacific region, without explicitly mentioning Taiwan. At the same time, Taiwan plans to invest $40 billion in its security, including in the development of an air defense system. Relations between Taiwan and China are tense, with Beijing claiming the island and threatening to use force to control it.
