Trump mentioned that he had a constructive discussion with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, who warned him to be cautious in arms sales to the island. Taiwan recently announced purchases of American weapons worth $11.1 billion, the largest sale since 2001, which prompted Beijing to launch military exercises around the island. The new U.S. National Defense Strategy for 2026 emphasizes deterring China in the Indo-Pacific region, without explicitly mentioning Taiwan. At the same time, Taiwan plans to invest $40 billion in its security, including in the development of an air defense system.
