American President Donald Trump has stated that he will discuss with Taiwan's President, Lai Ching-te, a move unprecedented for an American leader, which could affect relations between the USA and China. This is the first direct conversation between the leaders of the two sides since the diplomatic recognition of China in 1979.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan has expressed Lai's willingness to discuss with Trump. Trump's comments come after a meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and have been interpreted as a confirmation of his intention to address the Taiwan issue. Beijing has previously reacted to Trump's conversation with former President Tsai Ing-wen, and now fears an escalation of tensions.
Lai Ching-te emphasized his government's commitment to maintaining the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, despite threats from China.
