President Donald Trump claims that the war between the United States and Iran will end “immediately after” the U.S. legislative elections on November 3, without explaining, however, through what agreement or under what conditions the confrontation would stop. The statement was made on Wednesday, before his departure for the Republican convention in Dallas.
Trump said that Iran is prolonging the conflict to influence the election and weaken the Republican Party. Asked whether negotiations with Tehran are still possible, the U.S. president said that they “could take place,” but that his administration is not currently pursuing such an option.
The statements come as the war has entered its seventh month, and the confrontation has expanded into the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Iran announced that it had attacked ten ships, after U.S. forces destroyed five Iranian oil tankers. Washington denied that U.S. military vessels had been hit.
