American President Donald Trump described the United Kingdom's desire to strengthen ties with China as "very dangerous," commenting upon his arrival in Washington for the premiere of a documentary about his wife, Melania Trump. This statement came after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that it is "vital" for Great Britain to improve relations with Beijing during a historic visit to China. Starmer was accompanied by a delegation of nearly 60 business leaders, and during the meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, improvements to bilateral relations were discussed, including reducing tariffs on British whisky and granting visa-free travel for British citizens.

Trump also warned that it is "even more dangerous" for Canada to collaborate with China, mentioning that Ottawa should not consider Beijing a solution to its economic problems. In this context, Starmer emphasized that Great Britain does not have to choose between the USA and China, being able to maintain close relations with both countries. This diplomatic shift by the United Kingdom reflects similar trends in Canada, which recently signed a trade agreement with China. Trump threatened to impose high tariffs on Canadian goods if Ottawa continues to collaborate with Beijing, highlighting tensions among traditional allies.
