US President Donald Trump discussed the possibility of firing Jerome Powell, chairman of the Federal Reserve, during a meeting with Republican lawmakers. Trump has consistently criticized the Fed's monetary policy, unhappy with its refusal to cut interest rates. Although he has called for Powell's resignation, Powell, a Trump appointee, cannot be fired because of disputes over monetary policy. Powell plans to complete his term until 2026. Recent White House criticism has also focused on the cost of renovating the Fed's headquarters.
