U.S. President Donald Trump backed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Wednesday, one day after Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections. The result was linked to voters’ dissatisfaction with the war in Iran, and Hegseth’s position could be reevaluated.
Asked whether he intended to replace him, Trump stated that the Defense Secretary was “doing a very good job.” Despite this public support, sources cited by Reuters say that Hegseth could be on the list of officials who may be dismissed for the political failure of the conflict.
Vice President J.D. Vance questioned the wisdom of the war and suggested that it cost Republicans control of Congress. In addition, Hegseth faces criticism over his leadership of the Pentagon, his strained relationship with lawmakers, and military decisions concerning Iran, Ukraine, and operations in Latin America.
Democrats have promised investigations into his activities, including purges within the army’s leadership. Republicans are also considering the possible appointment of Hegseth to the Senate, following the vacancy of the seat held by Marsha Blackburn. The Department of Defense maintains that he is “100% dedicated” to the position until the end of Trump’s term, in January 2029.
