Donald Trump tried to leverage Beijing's influence over Moscow to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict, now in its fifth year, according to sources cited by the South China Morning Post.

At last month's leaders' summit in Beijing, Trump informed Xi Jinping that negotiations between Russia and Ukraine had stalled and urged him to bring Russian President Vladimir Putin back to discussions with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky. This request underscores Washington's desire to involve China in efforts to end the war, a central theme in Trump's foreign policy upon his return to the White House.

The summit took place against a backdrop of rare progress for Ukraine, which has recently regained territory. Direct negotiations between Moscow and Kiev have failed, and Trump continued to encourage Zelensky to reach an agreement with Russia.
