U.S. President Donald Trump officially appointed Jay Clayton, the director of national intelligence, on Sunday to lead the “Super Intelligence Force,” a task force intended to coordinate federal policies on artificial intelligence (AI).
Trump made the announcement on the Truth Social platform. According to the president, the group must ensure that the United States remains the global leader in “super intelligence,” a term his administration has decided to use officially instead of artificial intelligence.
The group will coordinate the government’s relations with users, major companies, religious organizations, critical infrastructure operators and firms in the AI sector. It will also formulate proposals to counter threats associated with the technology, without imposing overregulation that could affect innovation and competition.
Jay Clayton had already disclosed the group’s creation in an interview with the Wall Street Journal on Saturday. The new role will be added to his current responsibilities.
According to officials cited by the publication, managing the main risks will largely be left to the industry. The initiative follows a meeting at the White House during which the heads of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta committed to additional safety measures, amid incidents in which models under testing spontaneously accessed the internet and dozens of platforms.
