At the NATO summit in Turkey, Donald Trump stated that the U.S. could allow Ukraine to produce Patriot missiles, surprising news for President Volodymyr Zelensky. Although Ukraine has been working on this issue for years, Trump acknowledged that he has not yet discussed it with American manufacturers, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon.
Zelensky emphasized that starting production would help Ukraine meet its defense needs as well as those of its allies. Patriot missiles are essential for intercepting Russian ballistic missiles, but Ukraine is facing a critical shortage.
In recent weeks, Russian attacks have caused numerous casualties, and the lack of Patriot missiles has worsened the situation. Ukraine has managed to shoot down 90% of the drones and cruise missiles, but ballistic missiles remain a challenge.
Obtaining a license for the production of Patriot missiles would represent an important step, but implementation could take months. Currently, Ukraine has requested immediate assistance from allies to cope with Russian attacks. The Kremlin has downplayed the significance of Trump's announcement, emphasizing that it would not significantly change the situation in the conflict.
