The Trump administration has released FBI files on Martin Luther King Jr. containing more than 240,000 pages, despite opposition from family and civil rights organizations. King's children were informed before the release and emphasized that the documents should be interpreted with respect for the family's grief. The records were originally sealed until 2027 and their release was requested by the Justice Department. King had been the target of an aggressive surveillance campaign by the FBI, led by J. Edgar Hoover, which sought to discredit his work.
