A treasure hunter from Germany found a treasure from the Roman period, consisting of hundreds of silver coins, a gold ring, a gold coin, and silver ingots, in 2017, near the village of Borsum. The man used a metal detector without a permit and did not report the discovery for 8 years. Only in April 2023 did he notify the authorities, who sent a team to check the area. A subsequent archaeological investigation led to the discovery of another 450 coins, making this treasure one of the most important in Lower Saxony. The prosecution dropped the investigation against him due to the expiration of the statute of limitations.
