The accident occurred while the train was heading to Cairo from the Matrouh province, with seven carriages derailed and two overturned. The Ministry of Health mobilized 30 ambulances to transport the injured to hospitals. Derailments are common in Egypt due to the outdated railway system and poor management, and authorities have opened an investigation to determine the cause of the incident. The government has announced initiatives to improve the railways, estimating costs of approximately 8.13 billion dollars for renovations.
