On Saturday, 18 migrants, all men, were found dead after their vessel capsized south of the Greek island of Crete. Two survivors, in critical condition, have been hospitalized. The circumstances of the shipwreck are still unclear, and autopsies will be performed to determine the causes of death. The vessel was discovered by a Turkish cargo ship, and Greek authorities have mobilized several ships and a helicopter to intervene. The two survivors stated that the boat became unstable due to bad weather, without access to food or water.
Since the beginning of the year, over 16,770 migrants have arrived in Crete, and the Greek government has suspended the processing of asylum applications to manage the increased flow of migrants. This tragedy highlights the dangers of crossing the Mediterranean Sea, a route used by migrants coming from Libya to reach the European Union.
