A 19-year-old woman, along with a 48-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man, died from asphyxiation during the celebrations in Mexico City, following Mexico's 2-0 victory over Ecuador. Over a million people gathered in the city center, especially around the Angel of Independence monument, to celebrate Mexico's first victory in the knockout stages of the World Cup since 1986. Health authorities reported that emergency services treated three unconscious individuals before transporting them to the hospital, but all were confirmed dead due to asphyxiation. Mayor Clara Brugada expressed condolences to the families and emphasized the importance of responsible celebrations. Mexico's victory takes them to the quarter-finals of the competition, where they could face England.
