After the death of the supreme leader Ali Khamenei, his advisor Mohammad Mokhber announced that the transition in Iran will be ensured by a triumvirate consisting of Massoud Pezeshkian, the head of the judiciary Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, and a jurist from the Guardian Council of the Constitution.

Since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, Iran has had only one transfer of power, in 1989, when Khamenei succeeded Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

According to Iranian law, the Assembly of Experts, consisting of 88 members, must elect a successor as soon as possible, and a leadership council can temporarily take over the leadership duties.

The announcement came after the confirmation of Khamenei's death by state television and publications, which described him as a "great scholar and mujahid" who sacrificed his life for Iran. It was also reported that several members of Khamenei's family were killed in attacks.
