The Trump administration has appointed a representative for the Bucharest 9 (B9) Summit, which will take place on May 13 at the Cotroceni Palace. Thomas G. DiNanno, Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, will represent President Donald Trump, who was invited but has conveyed that he will not be able to attend.
The summit, co-chaired by President Nicușor Dan and his Polish counterpart Karol Nawrocki, will address the theme "Delivering More for Transatlantic Security." The B9 format brings together countries from NATO's eastern flank: Romania, Poland, Bulgaria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia. Representatives from the Nordic countries and the NATO Secretary General are also invited to the event.
The summit takes place in a complicated political context, with a recently fallen government in Romania, which delays the formation of a new cabinet. The President of Romania wishes to finalize discussions with party leaders before the summit.
