A Chinese worker was rescued after spending ten days in a flooded tunnel in Nepal

A Chinese worker was brought out alive on Saturday, September 5, from a flooded tunnel in Nepal, ten days after devastating floods hit Nepal and Tibet. The rescue was the intervention teams’ third success, giving them renewed hope in their search for missing people.

The day before, two Nepali workers, Sanjay Shah and Kabir Maharajan, had been rescued from the tunnel of the Trishuli 3A hydropower plant after teams heard a voice at a depth of approximately 50 meters. The tunnel was blocked by water, mud and large rocks, while rescuers used explosives and dug a channel to drain the water.

Operations are continuing at several affected hydropower projects, with specialists from Nepal, India, China, South Korea and Australia taking part. At Trishuli 3A, approximately 40 workers were believed to still be trapped underground, but the intervention is extremely risky because of accumulated water and unstable ground.

The disaster toll remains subject to updates and varies depending on when it is reported. As of September 5, more than 1,200 deaths and thousands of missing people had been reported in Nepal and Tibet. Approximately 30 hydropower projects were damaged.4o mini
