Representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO) are rushing to develop a set of recommendations for the nearly 150 passengers on a cruise ship affected by an outbreak of hantavirus. They will arrive on land during the day on Sunday.

WHO officials, along with hantavirus experts, emphasize that the outbreak can be managed through standard public health measures, including isolating sick passengers and those who have come into contact with them. The Andes strain of hantavirus spreads through close contact, and the director of the WHO department, Abdi Rahman Mahamud, stated that adherence to public health measures can prevent an epidemic.

WHO recommendations may include daily temperature monitoring of exposed individuals for 42 days. So far, the ship's operator has announced that no passengers are showing symptoms.

The vessel is heading to the island of Tenerife, where authorities are preparing for the disembarkation of passengers.
