In the document entitled 'Quo Vadis, Humanitas?', the International Theological Commission (ITC) warns that humanity is facing unprecedented risks due to technology. Approved by Pope Leo XIV, the document emphasizes a loss of the sense of history and a transformation of the culture of memory into a culture of the present. The Vatican describes the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) as a force that creates a hyperconnected world, with economic and social dynamics becoming uncontrollable. Human action is reduced to a resource to be analyzed and formatted for power purposes, increasing the risks of manipulation. Interpersonal relationships, especially within families, are seen as a barrier against homogenizing globalization. The Pope has expressed concerns regarding the lack of transparency in AI algorithms and their oligopolistic control, as well as the militarization of AI, denouncing the delegation of vital decisions to machines as a destructive spiral.
