During a NATO meeting in Helsingborg, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the importance of a plan B in case Iran decides to keep the Strait of Hormuz closed. Rubio mentioned that some countries could be affected more than the United States by this situation and that it is essential to discuss possible actions. Although the U.S. could act unilaterally, Rubio preferred an approach within an international coalition.
He mentioned a Franco-British initiative for deploying mine sweepers, but emphasized that this does not cover the scenario in which Iran refuses cooperation. France has rejected a NATO intervention, instead promoting an independent multinational mission to ensure safe navigation in the area, but only after a lasting ceasefire. In the last 24 hours, Iran has allowed the passage of 35 commercial vessels, but under strict conditions, which has raised concerns and increased maritime insurance costs.
