The U.S. State Department is working on an online portal called 'freedom.gov', aimed at providing access to content banned by European governments, including hate speech and terrorist propaganda.

The project, led by Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy, Sarah Rogers, aims to counter censorship but has been postponed for presentation at the Munich Security Conference. There are concerns among U.S. officials regarding the legal implications and relations with European allies, considering that the portal could encourage citizens to violate local laws. Additionally, the U.S. approach to freedom of expression significantly differs from that of the European Union, which imposes strict rules to combat hate speech and extreme propaganda.

The project could further strain relations between the Trump administration and European states, already affected by trade disputes and other geopolitical tensions.
