On Friday, the American military launched a 'massive attack' against the Islamic State (IS) group in Syria, in response to the killing of three American citizens, two of whom were military personnel, in a shooting attack in the Syrian desert. The U.S. Central Command (Centcom) announced that fighter jets, attack helicopters, and artillery struck over 70 targets in central Syria, also involving aircraft from Jordan.
The operation, named 'Hawkeye' Strike, used over 100 precision munitions, targeting IS infrastructure and weapon depots. Admiral Brad Cooper emphasized that the U.S. will continue to hunt down terrorists who threaten Americans and their partners. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated that the operation does not mark the beginning of a war, but a 'declaration of revenge.'
President Donald Trump confirmed the attacks, mentioning that the Syrian government supports the actions. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that a key IS leader and several fighters were killed in the attack.
