Shortly after discussions between American and Iranian officials in Oman, which were described by Tehran as taking place in a "positive atmosphere," the United States imposed new oil sanctions against Iran on Friday. President Donald Trump emphasized the commitment to reduce Iran's "illicit" oil exports, accusing the regime of financing destabilizing activities and repressing its own people.
The sanctions target 15 entities and 2 individuals, including ships from a "shadow fleet" associated with oil trade deemed illegal by the U.S. These measures freeze the targeted assets in the U.S. and prohibit business with them. The announcement of the sanctions coincides with the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf, while Washington threatens Iran with military action if no agreement is reached regarding the nuclear program.
The U.S. demands the surrender of the entire stock of enriched uranium and the limitation of long-range missiles, in the context of a broader campaign to remove the regime in Tehran.
