The British authorities have announced the deployment of a squadron of RAF Typhoon fighter jets in Qatar to patrol over the Strait of Hormuz, as part of a multinational mission aimed at ensuring the security of the maritime route following the conflict with Iran. The proposal was discussed during a two-day meeting attended by representatives from approximately 30 countries, organized in Northwood and coordinated with France.
Currently, eight aircraft are already deployed in Qatar, involved in intercepting drones in the Middle East. London has also proposed sending drones for mine detection and specialized divers for clearing mined waters. Although the deployment of a warship, such as HMS Dragon, has not been decided, British Defense Minister John Healey has requested the development of "practical military options" to protect freedom of navigation. The United Kingdom and its allies do not intend to take military action against Iran, but are prepared to intervene to protect commercial shipments in the event of a peace agreement. The priority remains the air component, with RAF aircraft deployed in the region to support allies.
