The United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia are working together to develop unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) as part of the AUKUS trilateral defense pact, announced U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. The program is part of 'Pillar Two' of AUKUS, which aims to develop advanced defense technologies, including quantum computers and artificial intelligence.
Hegseth emphasized that this flagship project will provide adaptable multi-mission UUVs, essential for underwater operations and maintaining maritime advantage. British Defense Minister John Healey added that AUKUS must move from words to actions, delivering advanced combat technologies. The pact, created in 2021 to counter China's influence in the region, has been criticized by Beijing, which considers it dangerous and a source of tensions.
