The United Nations has issued a severe warning regarding the humanitarian situation in Gaza, emphasizing that the survival of the territory is at stake. The report from the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) states that Israeli military operations have destroyed all essential resources, including access to food, water, and medical assistance, leaving Gaza in a "man-made abyss." Since the beginning of the conflict on October 7, 2023, the number of casualties has dramatically increased, with over 69,756 Palestinians dead, the majority being women and children.
The report estimates that the reconstruction of Gaza will require approximately 70 billion dollars and will take decades to return to the pre-conflict standard of living. UNCTAD proposes urgent measures, including an international recovery plan, the resumption of tax transfers from Israel, the easing of trade restrictions, and the introduction of a universal basic income for the population. It also mentions the economic deterioration in the West Bank, and the UN warns that swift actions are essential for the future of Gaza.
