Kirill Dmitriev, the Russian negotiator in discussions with the US to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, stated that the transatlantic alliance is "determined" following Donald Trump's threats to impose tariffs on European countries that contest his desire to purchase Greenland.

Trump announced a 10% tax on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, and the United Kingdom, which could increase to 25% in June. Dmitriev mocked the European reactions and speculated that, in the future, Europe would yield, and the US would obtain Greenland, thus restoring transatlantic unity. In response, the eight targeted countries condemned Trump's actions, considering them a "dangerous downward spiral." Protests took place in Greenland and Copenhagen, where citizens stated that 'Greenland is not for sale.' Trump continued to assert that Denmark has not protected Greenland from Russian threats.

Additionally, Russian officials, including Dmitry Medvedev, welcomed the divisions within NATO, predicting an open conflict between the US and Europe. Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, is considered by Trump essential for US national security, and Denmark has consistently rejected his offers to buy it.

US President Donald Trump escalated threats on Monday and suggested that he might annex Greenland, citing that he did not receive the Nobel Peace Prize, in a letter addressed to the Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Store.

Ambassadors of member states met urgently in Brussels to analyze the imposition of tariffs of 93 billion euros on the United States or restricting access for American companies to the European market, but they did not reach any conclusion, with the leaders of the 27 EU member states set to meet in the coming days to discuss a response to the American president's threats.
