Wes Streeting announced that packaged milkshakes and lattes will be included in the sugar tax, which will be applied for the first time to these beverages. The exemption for milk-based drinks will be removed, and the tax threshold will be reduced to 4.5 g of sugar per 100 ml. This measure is part of a broader strategy to combat obesity, considering that at least 85 countries have implemented sugar taxes on beverages to discourage consumption. In Europe, several countries, including France and Poland, have adopted such taxes.
Countries such as Slovakia, Estonia, Germany, Malaysia, and India are preparing or have implemented similar taxes, aiming to generate revenue and promote public health by reducing sugar consumption.
