This has been a source of controversy, similar to other Confederate monuments erected after the Civil War. In August, the National Park Service announced the plan to bring back the refurbished statue, citing an executive order signed by Trump for the restoration of American history.
Democratic Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton criticized this action, considering it offensive to members of the military. The statue, built in 1901, has been a subject of disputes, and Norton has attempted several times to have it removed. Pike, accused of his contribution to the formation of the Ku Klux Klan, is buried at the Masonic headquarters in Washington, which claims that the accusations are not supported by evidence.
