The Scottish Parliament is calling for a new referendum for independence. London immediately rejected the idea.

Scottish parliamentarians voted on Tuesday, with 72 votes to 55, for a motion that calls on the British government to approve a second referendum on Scotland's independence.

Scottish First Minister John Swinney stated that he will engage in dialogue with the British government, planning discussions with Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer in the next two weeks. In 2022, the UK Supreme Court ruled that London's agreement is necessary for organizing the referendum.

A spokesperson for Downing Street immediately rejected the idea, emphasizing the lack of a consensus similar to that of 2014.

John Swinney considered independence to be "urgent" due to the rise of the far-right Reform UK party and suggested that the referendum should take place in 2028, a proposal supported by the Scottish Greens.
