Slovakia's Prime Minister, Robert Fico, stated that his country will firmly oppose the use of frozen Russian assets to finance Ukraine's defense spending, emphasizing that Slovakia will not participate in any mechanism to confiscate these funds for military purposes. This statement came in the context where European Union leaders have postponed a decision regarding the use of these assets, despite appeals from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Additionally, Belgium has blocked the proposal to use frozen billions of euros to support a 140 billion euro loan intended for Ukraine, which could affect financial support from the International Monetary Fund. Fico, known for his opposition to EU measures against Russia, threatened to use the veto power to obtain concessions. The European Union will discuss this issue at a meeting scheduled for December.
