The center-right Prime Minister of Latvia, Evika Silina, announced on Thursday that she is also resigning, causing the collapse of the governing coalition just a few months before the scheduled elections in October, Reuters reports.
"I am resigning, but I am not giving up," she said in a televised statement.
The decision came after the left-wing Progressives party withdrew its support, following the dismissal of Defense Minister Andris Spruds, due to the management of incidents involving Ukrainian drones that entered Latvian airspace from Russia.
Silina acknowledged that anti-drone systems were not implemented quickly enough. The President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkevics, will hold discussions with all parliamentary parties to find a new government leader.
In the context of the drone incidents, Latvia and Lithuania have called on NATO to strengthen air defense in the region, and Ukraine has proposed sending experts to help secure the airspace of the Baltic states.
