The German Ministry of Finance intends to gradually increase the tobacco tax, according to a draft law consulted by DPA. The average price of a pack of 20 cigarettes could reach approximately 11.40 euros in 2030, compared to 8.80 euros in 2027. The tax component in the retail price would increase from 4.40 euros to 5.75 euros per pack.
The aim of this measure is to protect public health and reduce the number of smokers, especially among young people. It is also expected that the increase in the tax will generate significant additional revenue for the government, estimated to reach 3.6 billion euros in 2030. Compared to other countries in Western Europe, cigarettes are relatively cheap in Germany, with a pack costing an average of 7.33 euros in 2024, compared to 12.07 euros in France.
