Camilla Schick, a British journalist at CBS News, reports that the Pentagon is using the AI model Claude from Anthropic in military operations, including in the recent attacks on Iran. Although there is a government ban on the use of AI, the Pentagon claims it can use Claude for "all legal purposes."
The dispute arose due to Anthropic's request to impose restrictions to prevent the use of AI in mass surveillance of Americans or in fully autonomous weapons. Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, stated that the company wants to protect American values.
President Trump ordered federal agencies to cease the use of Anthropic technology, and the Secretary of Defense declared the company a risk to the supply chain. The Pentagon uses Claude to streamline documents and supply chains, but its replacement could take up to three months or more.
