The Pentagon has announced that all active military personnel and reservists over the age of 30 will be subjected to mandatory testosterone level testing as part of annual medical checks.
Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, emphasized that the purpose of the program is to identify hormonal deficiencies and ensure adequate medical care to maintain the operational capacity of soldiers. Those diagnosed with low testosterone levels will have the option to undergo hormone replacement therapy, while testing will be optional for those under 30. Hegseth clarified that the program does not aim to artificially enhance physical performance and that the use of testosterone without medical indication remains prohibited.
The Pentagon's spokesperson, Sean Parnell, mentioned that the protocol will help maintain a healthy fighting force.
The announcement has generated mixed reactions, with calls for the testing to be extended to women, but also criticism regarding the initiative.
Experts emphasize the importance of testing but warn about the risks associated with hormone replacement therapy.
