Gijs Tuinman, the Secretary of State for Defense of the Netherlands, stated that the Netherlands could theoretically "break" the software code of the F-35 Lightning II aircraft, which could suggest independent operation without American technical support. Access to the source code is essential for updates and weapon integration. Although the discussion has been fueled by speculation, experts emphasize that there is no remote deactivation mechanism, and modifying the software would involve significant risks.

Tuinman compared the process to "jailbreaking" iPhones, but acknowledged that applying it to a fighter jet would be much more complex. The F-35 concept was designed so that the development of capabilities depends on American involvement, and without access to the infrastructure and updates provided by the U.S., operators cannot integrate new weapons or correct errors.

The Netherlands is a level two partner in the F-35 program, having limited access to sensitive components, while the United Kingdom is the only level one partner. The discussion about "breaking" the F-35 code reflects more of a need for strategic autonomy in Europe, but sovereignty over this aircraft remains ultimately in Washington.
