The military of Guinea-Bissau announced on Wednesday that they have taken "total control of the country," arrested the acting president, and suspended the electoral process, while the country was awaiting the results of the presidential and parliamentary elections.

The coup took place in the middle of the day, after gunfire was heard near the presidential palace in the capital Bissau and after men in military uniform occupied the main road leading to the palace, reported AFP journalists on the scene.

The acting president Umaro Sissoco Embalo, who was the favorite in the presidential elections on Sunday, was detained on Wednesday by the military "in the prison at headquarters" and is being "treated well," an army officer told AFP.

The military also announced that they have closed the borders and will impose a state of emergency.
