The Lutheran Church in Norway apologized to homosexuals in a gay bar in Oslo, acknowledging the way it treated them in the past. In the 1950s, the Bishops' Conference classified homosexuality as a "social danger," and Bishop Olav Fykse Tveit stated that the Church has harmed the LGBTQ+ community and caused shame.
Although the Church has adopted a more liberal approach, allowing homosexual pastors and religious unions between people of the same sex, the apologies are considered too late by some activists. Stephen Adom, the leader of the Gender and Sexual Diversity Association, emphasized that these apologies come too late for those who have suffered due to stigmatization. He also mentioned the rise of religious conservatism that affects the acceptance of diversity. London Pub, the venue where the apologies were made, was previously the scene of a shooting during Gay Pride in 2022. A survey showed that 65% of Norwegians believe the Church should apologize to homosexuals.
