The Catholic Archdiocese of New York and the attorneys representing approximately 1,300 people who say they were sexually abused by priests have reached an $800 million settlement agreement. The agreement would be one of the largest in the United States in a case involving sexual abuse committed by members of the clergy.
Archbishop Ronald Hicks confirmed the agreement in a message sent to the clergy on Saturday. He noted, however, that the agreement will not become final until it is signed by all parties, an operation scheduled for November 6, according to the Associated Press.
The compensation concerns legal claims filed by people who allege they were abused by clergy members of the Archdiocese of New York. The case is part of a series of legal actions that have forced several U.S. Catholic archdioceses to pay considerable sums to victims.
The largest settlement of this kind was reached by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, which agreed in 2024 to pay $880 million to approximately 1,000 victims. The archdiocese had previously paid another $740 million in compensation.
